About This Map

About This Map..

This map is provided as a free public service to those who research, study, plan for, or are otherwise concerned with the coming Bird Flu Pandemic. It contains incident data from 01/22/2007 going forward, and there is no plan to add data from previous dates. It is meant to give a global picture of the current bird flu situation, rather than a historical view.

It was created by the publishers of www.GlobalIncidentMap.com which displays terrorism and other suspicious activity, on the suggestion of friends in the military, and others, who expressed a need for a bird flu version of our mapping process. Because the same process can be used to display incidents of any kind we have created http://birdflu.globalincidentmap.com and have made the map publicly available.

This is a new project, many changes may occur over the coming days while we learn how to better refine how we obtain the open source information displayed on this map. We are currently using the same methodology and decision process used for our other open source intelligence gathering efforts, to locate these bird flu articles and to decide whether or not they are appropriate for display. Currently this is being done manually, every item on this map has been manually reviewed and added to the map, but an automated process is in the works for deployment in the near future.

Because there are limitations with regarding to geocoding the location of many foreign incidents using Googlemaps, it should be understood that icons appearing on the map are as close to the location of ocurrence as we can get, but are often inaccurate - generally speaking the icon appears over the capital of the country where the incident occurs but may or may not be more accurate than that. To determine the actual location of an incident you must read the article, do not rely specifically on the icon placement on the map.

We hope you find this bird flu map of use, your suggestions are always welcome.
